Current  Workshops: 2012-2013

San Francisco Clayworks:

June 28,29,30, 2013

This workshop will focus on thrown and altered pots. Working all day Saturday throwing forms and talking about the skills utilized in pulling handles and making lids fit, but also engaging in conversations about why we make certain choice about form and how it profoundly impacts the piece itself. Sunday will see the assembling of the pieces thrown on Saturday with leather hard alterations using techniques involving scraping, paddling and poking.

Friday night will be a free “slide show” and general talk about my work.

Altered Pots

It has been my passion for 30 years to make pots, on the wheel, for use in everyday life.  Certain obsessions with form and line have driven my exploration.  In this workshop  I hope to share that and to show many of the methods and techniques I use to develop those shapes.  I will demonstrate a wide variety of altered forms.Though beginning on the wheel, they deviate from round using a range of techniques from simple immediate manipulation of the wet pots as they leave the wheel, to a more forced imposition of form on leather hard clay…. a variety of approaches will be demonstrated: twisting, pleating, paddling, squaring and shaving.

I will also try, in each demonstration, to expand awareness of the many choices made, moment to moment, often unconsciously, that deeply affect the resolution and expressive nature of simple pots. Balance, scale, contour, shape, feel, proportion, surface are all words that will come up as we look at and delve into the choices made when pots are being formed.

Through discussion, demonstration, and slide presentation I hope to spark new ideas and encourage a thoughtful exploration of form       .
